Knowing what to look for when searching for a therapist can be difficult. Below you will find simplified descriptions of the types of professionals who may offer counseling services to identify what you are looking for in your therapy journey.
LMHC: LMHC stands for licensed mental health counselor. LMHCs have completed master’s level education, a minimum of two years of counseling under supervision, have passed their state board exam, and can specialize in various areas of treatment. LMHCs have extensive training in the treatment of mental health disorders.
LCSW: LCSW stands for licensed clinical social worker. LCSWs have completed master’s level education, a minimum of two years of counseling under supervision, have passed their state board exam, and can specialize in various areas of treatment. LCSWs have extensive training in systems that impact people.
LMFT: LMFT stands for licensed marriage and family therapist. LMFTs have completed master’s level education, a minimum of two years of counseling under supervision, have passed their state board exam, and can specialize in various areas of treatment. LMFTs have extensive training in the treatment of familial and relational systems.
RMHCI: RMHCI stands for registered mental health counselor intern. RMHCIs have completed their master’s level education and are in the process of completing two years of counseling under supervision in pursuit of licensure. RMHCIs have extensive training in the treatment of mental health disorders.
RMFTI: RMFTI stands for registered mental health counselor intern. RMHCIs have completed their master’s level education and are in the process of completing two years of counseling under supervision in pursuit of licensure. RMHCIs have extensive training in the treatment of familial and relational systems.
RCSWI: RCSWI stands for registered clinical social worker intern. RCSWIs have completed their master’s level education in social work and are in the process of completing two years of counseling under supervision in pursuit of licensure. RCSWIs have extensive training in systems that impact people.
PsyD: PsyD stands for a doctor of psychology. PsyD degrees provide specialized and extensive training in treatment and assessment of mental health disorders. PsyDs are viewed as being more focused on mental health counseling and treatment as opposed to PhDs which are viewed as being more focused on research contributions.
PhD: PhD stands for a doctor of philosophy which can be concentrated in counselor education, clinical psychology, developmental psychology, and others. PhD degrees provide specialized training using a scientist-practitioner model of their focus area.
